It is an extraordinary pre-Inca and Inca fortress nestled high in the rugged mountains of the Acomayo province, overlooking the stunning Apurímac River canyon. Perched at around 4,300 meters above sea level, its name translates to "Horn Fortress" in Quechua (waqra meaning horn and pukara meaning fortress) due to the two dramatic stone crags framing the ruins like horns. Originally built by the Qanchi civilization and later integrated into the Inca Empire, this remote archaeological site served as both a sacred religious sanctuary and a defensive stronghold.
